Jacob wins a slice of LNG-Mega-Project

What is LNG?

LNG Liquid Natural Gas is natural gas that has been cooled down to -162°C for easier storage and transportation. In its liquid state, natural gas has a volume 600 times smaller than in its gaseous state and can be transported by ship, truck or rail to places that cannot be reached by conventional natural gas pipelines.

LNG is a relatively new addition to the German energy mix and helps to replace natural gas from Russia. With three new LNG terminals in Germany (Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel and Lubmin), a capacity for around 13.5 billion cubic meters of gas has been created. These terminals enable the import of LNG from all over the world and are a direct response to the need to become more independent in terms of energy policy.

Safety and reliability are top priorities in the production and transportation of gas. At Jacob, we are proud to have been selected by a world-leading EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) company in the field of gas production and processing to supply a comprehensive package of electrical installation material for their Nitrogen Recovery Units (NRUs).

Liquefied natural gas or LNG, is natural gas that has been super-cooled (−162°C) to a liquid state for easier storage and transportation. Natural gas has 600 times less volume in liquid form than gaseous, and LNG can be transported by ship, truck or rail to places traditional natural gas pipelines cannot reach.

Compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas emits the least amount of carbon dioxide when burned, prompting many countries to see it as a potential “bridge fuel” between dirtier fossil fuels and carbon-free energy sources. However, natural gas is primarily composed of methane, itself a powerful greenhouse gas, and the rate of methane leakage in natural gas production, transport and storage is still hotly debated.

Installation of the NRUs will take place at an LNG terminal in the USA, which is expected to help strengthen Germany's long-term energy security and support decarbonization goals in the future.

The package provided by Jacob includes LED Lighting Fixtures, Field Panel Boards, Local Control Stations, Plugs and Sockets from Killark Electric, as well as Cable Glands and Accessories from Hawke International for hazardous, explosive areas.

Our successful participation in this mega project underlines the strength of Jacob GmbH when it comes to planning and supplying comprehensive, explosion-protected solutions from a single source. This commission is the largest single order in the history of our business unit “Solutions for Hazardous Areas” and a significant milestone for our further growth.
