Precise diagnostics thanks to innovative interface

ControlEx connectors enable pressure monitoring in H2 trailers

Hydrogen offers numerous advantages over fossil fuels, particularly in the mobility sector, when it comes to environmental friendliness, sustainability and energy efficiency. While diesel and petrol release harmful emissions such as CO2 and nitrogen oxides during combustion, the use of hydrogen in fuel cells only produces water as a by-product. Furthermore, green hydrogen is a renewable energy carrier that can be obtained from sources such as wind and solar energy or biomass.

As with fossil fuels, the transportation and storage of hydrogen is subject to strict standards and guidelines. Modern tank systems are equipped with sensors and safety devices that react immediately to problems or pressure drops and inform the operator.

Maximator Hydrogen GmbH is a leading provider and developer of comprehensive system solutions for the entire hydrogen technology value chain. With its gas filling stations, Maximator Hydrogen ensures that vehicles are refueled reliably and safely, that high availability is guaranteed and that maintenance can be carried out professionally and quickly. To ensure that maintenance costs remain transparent and calculable, Maximator Hydrogen customers receive individual online access to keep an eye on the current status of their hydrogen filling station and the important system parameters 24/7. This allows anomalies to be analyzed in real time and any malfunctions to be minimized.

In one particular project, the customer expressed a specific request: a signal interface was to enable communication between the trailer delivering the hydrogen and the supply panel in order to be able to measure the pressure and therefore the fill level in the trailer. To meet this requirement, Maximator Hydrogen decided to work with Jacob GmbH and the ControlEx connector from HAWKE.

Benjamin Tauche, Head of Supply Chain at Maximator Hydrogen GmbH: “As explosive atmospheres can be present on the trailer, an appropriate solution is required. Thanks to the Ex d type of protection, the Hawke connector allows us to set up the circuit more easily than with other types of protection. Furthermore, the operating conditions are quite harsh. The plug is located outdoors, is frequently plugged in and may well fall down. With other plugs, we sometimes had to contend with wear and tear. However, the ControlEx from Hawke is so robust that we expect it to last much longer.”

The robust stainless steel housing of the ControlEx connector can accommodate up to 60 contacts and is suitable for single wires between 0.5mm² and 35.0mm². Depending on the contact arrangement and the approvals, up to 125 A and 750 V can be transmitted. The installation is possible in Ex d and Ex e applications.
