31.01.2012 - Welcome to the future of screwed cable glands

The PERFECT Fix plug-in cable gland, patent pending, facilitates assembly from just one side of the control cabinet without using counter nuts. Assembly and disassembly times are thus considerably reduced.

Plant and mechanical engineers do not usually pay much attention to screwed cable glands. Unsurprising really, considering the lack of new developments introduced here over the past few years. That’s about to change, however. The pioneer of screwed cable glands, Jacob GmbH in Kernen, has come up with a new plug-in cable gland that only needs to be mounted from one side of the control cabinet or housing. The assembly principle behind the PERFECT Fix plug-in cable gland is very simple:

Insert, engage, close and finished!
The traditional attachment method using a counter nut inside the housing has been made redundant.

The need for an inside thread is also no longer necessary. PERFECT Fix is suitable for cable entry points in all kinds of control cabinets, in switchgear construction, building services, as well as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

On the international stage, developments in production have the potential to lead to both cost and competitive advantages. For traditional suppliers such as Jacob, this means a direct contribution towards increasing client productivity, often characterised as an “extended workbench”. No sooner said than done! A development team from Jacob set itself the task of considerably shortening the assembly and disassembly times of screwed cable glands on the control cabinet.

In no time at all! Plug-in cable glands attached in three steps.

What resulted from these development efforts by Jacob is the new PERFECT Fix, a plug-in cable gland that can be attached to the inside of the control cabinet without the use of counter nuts. Assembly or disassembly with the PERFECT Fix is completed in just three steps – and without the need for any special tools:

1. The cable gland is inserted into the through-hole from the outside.

2. The securing nut is tightened in the left-hand thread.

3. To finish, the fitter guides a suitable cable through the opening and the
polyamide cap nut is tightened, this time to the right.

Altogether, the assembly and disassembly times during production and maintenance are considerably reduced with the PERFECT Fix plug-in cable gland. Particularly in those places where through-holes are difficult to reach. With a standard cable gland, a fitter needs to attach and tighten a hexagon nut from the inside of the housing, which can often prove awkward. Another advantage: With the PERFECT Fix plug-in cable gland, there is no protrusion of the thread inside the control cabinet; one benefit that certainly pays off in small or confined spaces. The PERFECT Fix cable gland meets the high impermeability requirements of protection class IP 68, even with extreme temperature fluctuations from –20° to +100°C. It also boasts an integrated strain relief and is suitable for all standard hole sizes (M16, M20, M25 and M32) with housing wall thicknesses of 1 to 4 mm.

The entire world of screwed cable glands

As a leading manufacturer, Jacob boasts a comprehensive programme of products and accessories in the area of screwed cable glands. For example, metric cable glands, cable glands for potentially explosive areas, cable glands in the most varied of materials (i.e. brass, stainless steel), the different plastics or with Pg-, NPT- and pipe threads. Most of the Jacob cable gland products have a VDE test certificate in accordance with EN 50262, as well as UL certification for the US market.
